Description

The Abbot and convent of St Mary's, York
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of St Mary's, York, state that because of threats of murder, arson and destruction from the citizens and community of York, they have fled their abbey, and do not dare to return, both because of these threats and because the citizens seize their provisions as they are being taken to the abbey, through malice on false pretexts, although the king has granted by his charter that they are not to be seized for any trespass, contract or agreement. They ask the king and council to take a good and sufficient security from the Bailiffs and citizens of York who are now before the council, and also to impose a strict penalty on all the citizens and community, if they seize the abbey's provisions, or harm the Abbot and convent or their ministers and servants, and that this security and penalty might be entered in the rolls of Chancery or elsewhere, in case they go against this.
