Nature of request
John, son of Hugh de Esyngwold, states that Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, in the thirty-fifth year of the king's father gave and granted to William Engelond and Muriel his wife, for term of their lives, all the lands and tenements in Easingwold which were in his hand through the death of Alan de Esyngwold, and that in the eleventh year of the reign of the present king they gave and granted these lands to him for term of their lives, and the earl confirmed this in the same year. John held these lands peacefully until the escheator expelled him because he, and William and Muriel, had acquired them without the king's permission. He asks that he might be received to make fine for the trespass, and continue to hold the lands until the death of William and Muriel.
