Description
Petitioners
Nicholas Est (East) of Heston
Name(s)
Est (East), Nicholas
Addressees
King and council and lords of parliament
Nature of request
Nicholas Est states that although he and his family have always been free, because he holds three acres of bondland in Heston, although paying an increment for it to hold it as a free man, the villeins of the manor are maliciously claiming in the manor court that he is a villein. He requests a remedy, so that he and his children can be free as their ancestors have been, and not distrained to perform villein services.
Nature of endorsement
This bill is to be sent into Chancery and a command is to be issued there to suitable people from the country to inquire diligently into the matter of this petition and its circumstances; and when that inquisition has been returned in the said Chancery, and the king's serjeants and others who should be called have been called, justice is to be done on this on the advice of the king's council.

Note
CPR 1377-81 p.130 is dated at Westminster, 20 February 1378, (also in CIM 1377-88 no.45). As the petition was presented in parliament, it must have been to the one held at Westminster in October 1377 (SC 8/109/5419 says that it was presented to the parliament held at Gloucester [sic] in the first year).CCR 1377-81 pp.205-6 (the writ of supersedeas) is dated at Westminster, 4 July 1378. CCR 1377-81 p.290, which seems to be related, is dated at Westminster, 10 March 1380, and CCR 1377-81 p.233, which may well also be related, is dated at Westminster, 8 March 1379.
