Description
Petitioners
Sarah de Estwod (Eastwood)
Name(s)
de Estwod (Eastwood), Sarah
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Sarah de Estwod, executrix of Avice Cole of Stepney, states that as executrix she sued a plea against the executors of William de Louth, Bishop of Ely in the court of the Archbishop of Canterbury - the predecessor of the current Archbishop - because the Bishop of Ely had withheld Avice's dower for six years. This plea has recently been transferred to the king's court, but is still not terminated. She requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
She is to sue further as seems best to her.
Places mentioned
Stebbenhyth (Stepney), [Middlesex]
People mentioned
Avice Cole of Stepney
William de Louth, Bishop of Ely
Note
William de Louth, Bishop of Ely, died on 25 March 1298. The Archbishop of Canterbury then, and so probably the predecessor of the current Archbishop mentioned in this petition, was Robert Winchelsey. He died on 11 May 1313, and after the appointment of Thomas Cobham was quashed in on 1 October 1313, was succeeded by Walter Reynolds, who received the temporalities on 3 January 1314. This means that this petition seems likely to date from around 1314, especially if it is taken to read that it was the court of the previous Archbishop that the petition was recently transferred from.
