Nature of request
The merchants of Spain state that when the Bailiffs of Southampton weigh their goods they use a false and deceitful scale to cheat the merchants, and request that the king assign a balanced weight there. They also state that if their goods are only half a pound in the nail underweight they lose the price of the whole nail, whereas they should lose only the price of what is lacking; and they request a remedy for this too.

Coram rege.The parties are to be called before the justices for the king's pleas and justice is to be done there.

The Latin summary of this petition is on a roll which claims to be from the Michaelmas parliament of 18 Edward I (1290) (Rot. Parl. vol. I p. 46) but which Richardson and Sayles, The English Parliament in the Middle Ages, chapter XIX, pp.146-7, ascribe to the Easter parliament of 1290.
