Nature of request
Baldwin Despynall, Prior of Lapley, states that he was ejected forcibly from his priory by Robert de Shareshull, Adam his brother, John de Robaston, Ralph de Barton of Lichfield and others, and afterwards reinstated by the Sheriff of Staffordshire, through a writ of the king or his council at the last parliament at Nottingham; but now he fears that the Abbot of St Remi, Reims, who has the right to present to Lapley and who presented him, is conspiring with one or other of the people he has named to abduct him and take him overseas, so that he does not dare to live in the priory. He asks for a suitable remedy, so that he can live there to serve God as he ought.

Note
CPR 1334-8 p.91 is dated at Nottingham, 1 April 1335, and makes it likely that the Nottingham parliament mentioned here is that of March 1335, rather than that of October 1330 or that of September 1336. Further evidence is provided by CPR 1334-8 p.136 (dated at Newcastle, 14 February 1335 (possibly the previous attack mentioned?)) and CPR 1334-8 p.145 (dated at York, 5 June 1335), which mention all the malefactors named here. It seems likely that this petition was presented to the parliament held at York in May 1335.
