Description

Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds complain that after a previous violent attack and robbery by the people of Bury St Edmunds, as a result of which they had to seal with their common seal a charter containing various franchises, obligations and quitclaims, which the townspeople are now exercising and claiming, these people have continued to attack and harass them severely. The king did summon both parties before him to try to reach an accord, but failed, and forbade each side to harm the other. Hearing that the townspeople were continuing their attacks, he has sent them many writs ordering them to stop, but they have paid no attention. The Abbot and convent request a remedy.

They are to sue at common law because the matter concerns the party. And if they wish to sue by oyer and terminer, they are to have one of the king's grace.
