Description
Petitioners
John de Ereswell (Eriswell).
Name(s)
de Ereswell (Eriswell), John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
John de Ereswell states that while the king was at war in Scotland the Prior of Ely had unknown persons seize him with force and arms in his house of Eriswell, which he holds of the king in chief of the honour of Bolougne, carry off his goods and chattels, beat him, wound him, and take him to Ely, where he was imprisoned for three years, and, despite twelve writs sent for his deliverance, was only released at All Saints last. He has sued against the Prior since then by a writ of trespass, but the Prior has not answered, through false returns by the Sheriff, but continues to threaten and lie in wait for the petitioner, so that he does not dare to sue. He requests grace and a remedy.

Places mentioned
Scotland
Eriswell, Suffolk
honour of Bolougne
Ely, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
[John de Fresingfeld], Prior of Ely.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1318', with reference to SC 8/45/2206, but it seems much earlier than that petition. Indeed, it would seem to date from around 1311: SC 8/45/2206 mentions a writ sued to attach the Prior for two years, which lapsed at the end of that time, at the quinzaine of Easter in the sixth year of the king's reign (1313). If this is the writ mentioned here, as having been sued since the prisoner's release at All Saints last, then that would seem to put the petition at some point in c. 1311.
