Reference
SC 8/45/2227
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Eregum (Ergum)
Name(s)
de Eregum (Ergum), Richard
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Richard de Eregum states that Isabel de Fort, Countess of Aumale, gave a messuage, a toft and three bovates of land in Preston in Holderness to Odinel de Eregum and Christina his wife, and to their heirs of Christina's body, and that they were seised of these tenements until, when the land of Holderness came into Edward I's hand, his Steward, William de Walcotes, seized them into the king's hand by colour of his office, so that they are now in the hand of the present king. Richard, who is the son of Odinel and Christina's son Thomas, requests a writ to the Escheator and others to inquire into whether or not his right is as he says.
Nature of endorsement
He is to explain his petition.
Places mentioned
Holderness, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
honour of Aumale
Preston, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
People mentioned
Isabel de Fort (Forz), Countess of Aumale
Odinel de Eregum (Ergum)
Christina [de Eregum (Ergum)], wife of Odinel de Eregum
John de Nottill, father of Christina de Eregum
Edward [I], King of England
William de Walcotes, Edward I's Steward of Holderness
Thomas [de Eregum (Ergum)], father of petitioner
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c. 1327 seq.' with reference to SC 8/45/2229, from the petitioner's father, 'but temp. Ed. III'. Since it refers to Edward I as the grandfather of the present king, it is clearly from the reign of Edward III, and it seems likely that such a petition, attempting to revive an old claim, would be delivered in the first years of a new reign.
