The merchants, mariners and other subjects of England and the king's other lands state that the King of France and his ministers have ordained and begun to use against them various forms of oppression, rigour and harshness that have not been seen for thirty years and more, and such as the king's grandfather and his counsellors most feared and worked against, with the aim of subjecting the king and the petitioners to the crown of France, and with other aims which the king's council will be able to understand if they examine four articles on the matter. They ask that three clerks or [missing due to damage] be assigned to examine these articles and the grievances that the petitioners can show them, and to inform the king and his council within three days, so that sufficient [remedy] can be ordained in this parliament.

Dated on the guard to 1327-1337: internal evidence suggests this must date to the reign of Edward III, and is presumably from the period before the outbreak of the Hundred Years War.
