Description
Petitioners
Robert de Elvet
Name(s)
de Elvet, Robert
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Robert de Elvet states that during the reign of the king's father he lent Robert de Welles, Provisioner at Carlisle £20 for provisions for the garrison there, and that he is also owed £12 for his horse lost in the service of the king's father in the March of Carlisle; and he has bills of the wardrobe for these debts. He requests a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer to pay him, and if there is no money to pay him, an assignment where he can be paid promptly.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have seen the bills mentioned by this petition, if they find that the debt is still due, they are to give him payment, allowance or assignment as soon as they conveniently can, receiving etc. and charging etc.
Places mentioned
Cardoyl (Carlisle), [Cumberland]
People mentioned
Robert de Welles, Provisioner at Carlisle
William de Melton, Archbishop of York and Keeper of the Wardrobe
Roger de Northburgh, Bishop of Chester (Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield) and Keeper of the Wardrobe
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1327 seq. with reference to William de Melton and Roger de Northburgh as Keepers of the Wardrobe (1 December 1314 - 1 February 1316, and 1 February 1316 - 1 May 1322, respectively) and to the debts of the king's father. It seems likely that such a petition would be from the early years of Edward III, and the language of the endorsement is like that of other petitions of the period concerning the king's debts.
