Reference
SC 8/45/2209
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Benedict de Eglefeld (Eaglesfield)
Name(s)
de Eglefeld (Eaglesfield), Benedict
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Benedict de Eglefeld states that he owes the king £15 for provisions bought from the king's father at Holmcoltran, and the king owes him £15 from the assignment made to him of the balance of a debt owed by the late king to Thomas de Bourgh for provisions for the castle and town of Carlisle, and asks that the one debt might be discharged by the other, considering that he is a poor man of the Scottish Marches, and bought the provisions because of the great harm done to him by enemy raids.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, containing the effect of this petition, that, if it is found that the balance was assigned to the said Benedict with the assent of the Treasurer and Barons, they are to allow him the one debt against the other.
Places mentioned
Holmcoltran (Abbey Town), Cumberland
Brigham, [Cumberland]
Cardoil (Carlisle), [Cumberland]
the Scottish Marches
People mentioned
Thomas de Bourgh, clerk
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1327 seq.' with reference to the king's father's debts, and it seems reasonable that these debts would be paid off at the start of a reign. However the endorsement suggests the sending of a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, not the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains, as is usual in petitions concerning debts from the early years of Edward III.Northern Petitions, pp.117-18 (no. 83) also gives a date of '? C. 1327', and includes several references to Thomas de Burgh.
