Date
[c. 1296]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Eglefeld (Eaglesfield)
Name(s)
de Eglefeld (Eaglesfield), Thomas
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Thomas de Eglefeld states that because Thomas de Ribbeton held part of the tenements of the honour of Cockermouth, which has come into the king's hand through the death of Isabel de Forz, Countess of Aumale, after his death the Escheator seized all his tenements into the king's hand, because of the minority of Alexander, his son and heir, and that although it was found by an inquest held in the Hilary term of the twenty-fourth year of the king's reign, that he held one carucate of land in Eaglesfield of the petitioner and not of the king, this carucate remains in the king's hand with the rest of the lands. Thomas requests the king's grace on this matter.
Nature of endorsement
The inquisition is to be examined.

John de Lythegrayns (Lithegreines), Escheator north of the Trent
Alexander [de Ribbeton], son of Thomas de Ribbeton
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c. 1296' with reference to the inquisition post mortem. The petition says that this was returned in Chancery in the Hilary term of 24 Edward I (1296), and CIPM, vol. III no.348 confirms this: the writ is dated 4 December 24 Edward I (1295), and the inquisition was held on the Tuesday after St Hilary. The petition is unlikely to date from long after that.John de Lythegrayns was Escheator north of the Trent between 23 August 1295 and 2 April 1299.
