Description
Petitioners
Edmund of Langley, Duke of York
Name(s)
Langley, Duke of York, Edmund
Addressees
King's council
Nature of request
Edmund, Duke of York states that since he recovered a certain sum of money in the court of the Marshalsea against Robert Kyngeston of Aylesbury, for a trespass committed against him by Robert, the same Robert, and Robert Sandham, John Abraham, Gerard Abraham, Henry Bailly and Thomas Boucher, have lain in wait for his tenants and servants between Aylesbury and his manor of Wendover and attacked and threatened them, and have harrassed them with false suits, and have refused to pay amercements in the Duke's court of Wendover. They have refused to discuss the matter with the Duke's Steward, Thomas Gerberge: therefore he asks that they might be summoned before the council to answer concerning this, and that they might find sufficient security to keep the peace against the Duke's tenants and servants.
Nature of endorsement
Be it remembered that on 24 June in the third year etc., having taken the council of my lords the Bishops of Exeter, Chancellor, Bath, Treasurer, and Hereford, the Keeper of the Privy Seal, Lord Lovel, J. Scarle, [J.] Prophete, and J. Frome, it was agreed that individual writs should be addressed to Robert Kyngeston of Aylesbury, Robert Sandham, John Abraham, Gerard Abraham, Henry Bailly and Thomas Boucher, named in the petition, to be before the king's council at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas next, on pain of £40, to answer to them on the matter contained in this petition.

Note
According to the endorsement, the decision on this petition was taken by the council on 24 June 3 Henry IV (1402), shortly before the Duke of York's death on 1 August. This would be consistent with the mention of the Bishop of Bath and Wells as Treasurer - a post he occupied between 27 February and 25 October 1402 - and of the Bishop of Exeter as Chancellor (9 March 1401 - 28 February 1403)
