Nature of request
The men request that they can have the town at the old fee farm which they had from time out of mind for £16 as the treasurer has give the town to others for £20 because they do not have a charter. If the king will not give it to them for £16 but for £20 then they request in aid of this two fairs, and that they be quit of pontage and other tolls, and that eyres, assizes and gaol deliveries be held in the town.
Nature of endorsement
It is accorded by the chancellor and treasurer that the people of Dorchester have the town at farm from Michaelmas next for five years rendering £20. And let it be assigned to sufficient men to enquire of how much the town is worth per annum when leased at farm, and what things pertain to the farm, and let the inquisition be returned.Coram rege.
