SC 8/44/2185
Date
[c. 1376]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Hatfield, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
Hatfield, Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
The bishop shows that he is lord of the Tweed to its midstream where the river adjoins his lands and has all manner of profits from it, Bolton seized the profits of the ferry there believing it to belong to the town of Berwick. He has previously petitioned on the matter and the petition was ordered into Chancery. The bishop has continually sued but has not been able to have a final answer. He requests that the council order a final discussion according to law and reason.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be viewed in Chancery and let justice be done.
Places mentioned
River Tweed
Descoce (Scotland)
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
John de Boulton (Bolton), late Chamberlain of Berwick
Note
The petition almost certainly dates to 1376 when the justices were ordered to view the record and process (CCR 1374-7, p.401). Although the bishop obviously felt that his suit was being delayed, it would seem that the matter was in the process of being dealt with as two commissions were ordered into the matter on 10 August and 28 November 1374 (CPR 1370-4, p.495; CPR 1374-7, p.64). It is possible that the petition dates to this earlier period of activity in 1374.
