Reference
SC 8/44/2171
Date
[c. 1365]
Description
Petitioners
John de Dynham, knight; Roger Torel.
Name(s)
de Dynham; Torel, John; Roger
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that Courtenay leased to them manors and lands in Devon and Somerset for their lives. The lands have been taken into the king's hand because an inquest found that the lands were held from the king in chief. The petitioners have petitioned to be able to prove this was not the case but are delayed because the keeping of the lands has been granted to the king's daughter and they are not able to have a fine. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
No endorsement.
Places mentioned
Devon
Somerset.
People mentioned
Thomas de Courtenay, knight
Isabella [of Woodstock], daughter of Edward III
Edward III, King of England
Note
The dating of this petition is somewhat problematic as the dating on the guard is based on the close roll entries which are writs concerning Dynham's suit over the manors and lands in 1365 (CCR 1364-8, pp.98-9, 180). No reference is made to the other petitioner, so if this followed Torel's death, the petition must be somewhat earlier than this date.
