Reference
SC 8/44/2160
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Durham.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that they have been ruined by the Scottish war that has lasted for a long time, and by the incursions of the enemy, and most particularly when the Scots stayed from 15-30 January 1322 causing considerable damage to the priory's estates and tenants. They request that the king ordain some aid and sustenance so that they can live and maintain divine service there until God by his grace and by royal aid brings amends.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Durham
Note
Fraser dates this to 1322 identifying the specified raid to be that led by Thomas Randolf, earl of Moray which reached well into Yorkshire (Northern Petitions, p.181). The guard suggests that this petition is earlier dating to 1320, though it refers to the taxation of the tenth imposed by Pope John XXII, and that the tax in the diocese of Durham should be levied at the new taxation (CCR 1318-23, p.269). This does not seem really to provide credible evidence to date the petition to this slightly earlier date.
