Nature of request
The bishop shows that his predecessor purchased the wapentake from Richard I to hold it as part of his liberty. Afterwards Henry III ordered John de Balliol to transfer his service to Bishop Robert. By an enrolment in the fine rolls the money paid by Balliol for castle guard at Newcastle has devolved upon the bishop so that he requests that the king have regard for his charters and confirmations acquitting him of such services, and he requests a writ to the treasurer and barons that he be acquitted of the sum according to the purport of his deeds.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by a writ containing the effect of the petition to the treasurer and barons that when they have viewed the charters and other evidences of the bishop, and heard his complaints and arguments , and searched the remembrances of the Exchequer and called to them the justices, if they find that the bishop ought to be discharged of the annual sum which is currently demanded of him then they should discharge him, and let the bishop have a respite of the sum until Christmas.
