SC 8/44/2153
Date
[1366-1367]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Hatfield, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
Hatfield, Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
The bishop shows that he is lord of the Tweed to its midstream where the river adjoins his lands and has all manner of profits from it, Bolton seized the profits of the ferry there believing it to belong to the town of Berwick. He has requested restitution of the issues before, and again requests restitution.
Nature of endorsement
Let the bill be ordered into Chancery, and the chamberlain and others who are to be called be summoned. Let justice be done.
Places mentioned
River Tweed
Descoce (Scotland)
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
John de Boulton (Bolton), late Chamberlain of Berwick
Robert de Tuggale (Tughall), Chamberlain of Berwick
Richard de Bury, Bishop of Durham
Robert de Bruys
Robert I, King of Scotland.
Note
The petition would seem to date to 1366-7 for a commission was made to several individuals to enquire of the bishop's complaint (CPR 1364-7, p.427). The dating on the guard is more circumspect troubling itself over the matter of Bolton's tenure of the office of Chamberlain, since he is clearly referred to in the petition as the former chamberlain. Although he appears to have held the office in 1376, the discussion on the guard seems irrelevant.
