Description
Petitioners
Richard de Bury, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
de Bury, Richard
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
The bishop shows that within his liberty of Durham he has all royal jurisdiction and prerogative so that the king's ministers should not enter the liberty, now a new writ has been issued from Chancery to the bailiffs of Hartlepool within the franchise to search the port to prevent silver, money, vessels and plate being taken out of the realm, such silver being seized to the king's use. The bishop requests that the chancellor be ordered to revoke the order, and that he be able to have a writ to the bailiffs forbidding their action.
Nature of endorsement
Because in earlier times it was adjudged in parliament that the ministers of the king acting in royal office within the liberty were ousted, let the commission made under the great seal to make the search at Hartlepool be revoked, and let it be ordered by writs to the bishop that he assign certain people in the port to make the search.
Places mentioned

Hartlepool, [County Durham].
