Name(s)
Bury, Richard

Nature of request
Richard, Bishop of Durham states that a writ has been sent to him from the Exchequer, ordering him to distrain certain people of his franchise and to answer to the king for the issues, and to produce their bodies before the Barons of the Exchequer to hear and do what is adjudged to them for not having received the order of knighthood before a certain time, as the king commanded: which writ he claims is contrary to his franchise, which gives him alone the right to do this. He asks the king and his council to send a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to repeal this writ and cease completely from this suit.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have heard the Bishop's complaint and seen his evidence and heard his arguments, if they can establish from these that he ought to have cognisance of why the people of his franchise have not taken arms, and the profits arising from this, then they are to cease from their distraint and allow the Bishop to have cognisance and receive the profits. And the Bishop is to have respite from this demand until Christmas, so that he can sue in the meantime.
