Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/43/2145
Date
[c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Arnold de Dureford (Durfort), knight
Name(s)
de Dureford (Durfort), Arnold
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Duchy of Guyenne, [France]
Nature of request
Arnold de Dureford, knight, whose brothers are beneficed in England by papal provision, states that they and their proctors cannot enjoy their benefices because of the malice of certain English people, and asks the king to order his ministers that the brothers and their proctors are to be maintained in right and reason, as his brothers have lost their rents in the Duchy of Guyenne by reason of the war.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have letters of protection.
Note
Dated on the guard to? c. 1335, with reference to CPR 1334-8 p.186, which is dated at Auckland, 12 December 1335. Galhard de Duro Forti is presumably one of the brothers mentioned, and this ratification of his estate may be a response to this petition. The note also refers to SC 8/43/2146, and continues 'but cf. also Pat. R. (1313-7) p.18': this, dated at Sheen, 30 September 1313, is one of a number of grants of protection (hard to tell which, if any, is relevant to this petition) to Galhard, going or (as in this case) staying overseas. It is not the first mention of him, so I cannot see that it is relevant, except to point up the length of his career, and the possibility that this petition is from the reign of Edward II. He is still alive in 1343 (CPR 1343-5 p.183, dated at Westminster, 3 December, where William de Kildesby, to whom the king had given the prebend of Wetwang, has recovered it successfully against his challenge). As CCR 1330-3 p.335 (Westminster, 3 October 1331) makes clear, there are two Arnold de Durefords, father and son, so this petitioner may not be the same as that of SC 8/43/2141 and SC 8/43/2146. CCR 1339-41 p.546 (Andover, 4 October 1340), reveals that the elder is dead by that time.
