Nature of request
The clothworkers of London state that they were granted a guild, with certain franchises, by the king's progenitors, so that only members of their guild may practise their craft in London, a charter has now been granted to Flemings, Brabanters and other aliens to practise their craft, contrary to the charter of their guild. They ask that the charter granted to these aliens might be annulled and their charter confirmed, or that they might be discharged from their annual payment for their guild and franchises.

Brabant
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1376' with reference to SC 8/123/6147 and SC 8/143/7128. SC 8/143/7128 is nearly identical, but contains a reference to the alien clothworkers receiving their charter in the reign of Edward III: so it must date from the reign of Richard II. Either this petition is contemporary, and does not mention Edward III purely by accident, or it is from the very end of the reign of Edward III.
