Reference
SC 8/43/2123
Date
[1296-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Hoton, Prior, and convent of Durham
Name(s)
de Hoton, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Doream (Durham), [County Durham]
Berwick upon Tweed, [Northumberland]
the Scottish March
Scotland
Beverlacum (Beverley), [East Riding of Yorkshire].
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Durham state that the king had granted them £40 by his charter, to be received annually in the Exchequer of Berwick, until he provided them with land or benefices of equal value, in exchange for certain alms, but that this money is often withheld from them. Therefore they ask to be provided with the land or benefices, in a suitable place close to the March.
Nature of endorsement
The Keeper and Chamberlain of Scotland are to be ordered by a writ of Chancery to inquire into where the king can best provide them with what they ask, and also the canons of the church of Beverley; and they are to inform the king of this.
Note
CPR 1292-1301 p.204 is dated at Berwick upon Tweed, 16 September 1296, and Rotuli Scotiae, vol.I, p.34 (the original warrant to Hugh de Cressingham to pay the pension)has the same date. The petition must date from between this period and the end of the reign on 7 July 1307, and quite possibly from earlier that SC 8/9/417. Interestingly, CPR 1292-1301 p.204 states that the Durham grant is vacated, because the Prior and convent were granted licence to appropriate the church of Hemingbrough on 7 March 30 Edward I (1302). However, this does not appear to have affected their claim on the £40, so perhaps this arrangement fell through.CCR 1302-1307, p.297 (an order to pay arrears) is dated at Westminster, 2 November 1305, and seems to be a response to SC 8/9/417.Rotuli Scotiae, vol.I, p.67 (the authorisation of payment of arrears for four years by Edward II) is dated 4 August 1309.
