Reference
SC 8/43/2116
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
William de Donston, executor of the testament of Roger de Nichol
Name(s)
de Donston, William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
William de Donston, executor of the testament of Roger de Nichol states that the king's grandfather owed Roger £20, and the then treasurer, William de la Marche, told Roger to go overseas with Lawrence de Lodelowe, to sell wool for the king's benefit, and that he would have his payment and further advancement on his return - but he was drowned on the voyage. William asks that he might have allowance in this £20 for £5 10 s. that he owes the king, and payment or assignment for the rest.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have examined the bond which he has for the debt, if they find that it is still due, they are to let him have an allowance in the debt which he owes the king, and for the rest they are to let him have payment or a suitable assignment as soon as they conveniently can, receiving etc.
People mentioned
Roger de Nichol (Lincoln)
[Edward I], King of England
William de la Marche (March), Treasurer of England
Lawrence de Lodelowe (Ludlow)
Note
This petition would seem to date from the beginning of Edward III's reign, as it refers to Edward I, who made the loan (see SC 8/42/2117) as the king's grandfather. The wording of the endorsement, too, is similar to that of other petitions of this period concerning money owed by the king.It is clear from SC 8/43/2118 that this petition was presented to a parliament held at Westminster. This is most likely to be the first parliament of the reign, that of January 1327, but might possibly be the next Westminster parliament, that of February 1329.William de la Marche was Treasurer between 6 April 1290 and 16 August 1295.
