SC 8/42/2098
Date
[c. 1310]
Description
Petitioners
Tin-miners (stannary men) of Devon.
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The tin-miners request that the king grant to Wibbebury that he can have a Tuesday market, and a fair to be held twice a year at Chagford, which he holds from the king in chief for their easement. The late king granted to them and the king confirmed that they were to have many liberties in Devon and were assigned to live in three vills, namely Tavistock, Ashburton and Chagford. They still reside at Chagford and hold their courts and pleas there but there is no market or fair there and none within 18 leagues where they can find food and drink and other necessities.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested that Wibbebury does not hold of the king in chief in Chagford, and it is to the damage of the neighbouring markets and fairs of the Bishop of Exeter and Hugh de Courtenay, the council considers that this should not be granted.
Places mentioned
Deveneshire (Devon)
Tavistock, [Devon]
Ashburton, [Devon]
Chagford, [Devon].
People mentioned
Simon de Wibbebury
Bishop of Exeter
Hugh de Curtenay (Courtenay).
Note
The dating of this petition is unsatisfactory. The guard assigns it to c. 1310 and following on the basis that the charter assigning the miners the three vills referred to in the petition was issued then, though the original charter was in fact issued in 1305. The petition certainly postdates these, but as the petition received a negative response no further evidence will survive for it, so that it is possible that the petition is significantly later.
