Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Darley.
Addressees
Council of the King
Nature of request
The petitioners requests that they can be granted the voidance of their abbey rendering for it as much as ought to be rendered, the abbot having died, and they not wishing to be ruined by the escheator.
Nature of endorsement
It should be examined as to how much the voidance was worth to the king at the last vacancy whereof the account is in the account roll of the escheator John de Houton from 4 Edward III. Now the abbot has made a fine of 20 marks that the prior and convent can have the custody of the temporalities at the first vacancy paying 20 marks for half a year and 40 marks for the whole, and a proportionate amount for any period longer than half a year.
Places mentioned
Darley, [Derbyshire].
Note
The petition can be securely dated to 1352 when the temporalities were granted to the prior and convent during the vacancy in accordance with the response to the petition (CFR 1347-56, p.342). Laurence Burton was elected abbot later in 1352 (CPR 1350-4, pp.348, 378).The abbot secured the same terms for the abbey before the next vacancy in 1383 (CPR 1381-5, p.276).
