Prior and convent of St Denys near Southampton.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners request that good and law-worthy be ordained to enquire in Hampshire and in other adjacent counties, as it was ordained that there be a staple for wool at Winchester, but this will be to the harm of the petitioners and all those who sell wool and they request that the staple be ordained at Southampton.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.2) Because it was ordained by common counsel that there be a staple at Winchester, let the staple be held there.

Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1326. References on the guard of SC 8/32/1579 associate this with mandates for the places where the staple was to be held and under what conditions (CPR 1324-7 p.269; CPR 1327-30 pp.98-99). These are dated 1 May 1326 and 1 May 1327 respectively. This petition could therefore be either from the end of the reign of Edward II or the beginning of that of Edward III.
