Nature of request
The petitioners state that they were granted by the king and his progenitors by their charters many franchises and liberties, namely to choose bailiffs, 4 people being chosen as alderman who would in turn choose 24 people who would choose the bailiff. They used this for a long time until one Michaelmas when Claver and Hay were chosen bailiffs, and 4 new aldermen were also chosen and there came Groos and others forcibly with their affinity, as he wished to be alderman and threatened the bailiffs. They wish that Groos and the others should find sureties to keep the peace towards them.
