[c. 1289]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Delse, son of William de Delse.
Name(s)
de Delse, Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Delse requests that he be able to recover the manors of Delce and Heppington from which he was ejected without judgement by the power of Chelesfeld, sheriff of Kent, and by the council and incitement of Rouecestre, and that if his sister Joan wishes to claim anything in the manors, he wishes to be able to answer according to the law of the land. Delse had been seised of the manors after the death of his brother, but was imprisoned by the sheriff, and his sister was put in seisine. Rouecestre took the manors from her and still holds them.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning ministers after the return from overseas.2) Against Salemon de Roff and William de Chelesfeld.
Places mentioned
Delse (Delce), [Kent]
Hebyndone (Heppington), [Kent].
People mentioned
William de Delse, brother of the petitioner
William de Chelesfeld, Sheriff of Kent
Robert, Crier of Kent
Solomon de Rouecestre (Rochester), king's justice
Joan de Delse, sister of the petitioner.
Note
The petition seems to fit into the period of administrative reform initiated by Edward I following his return from the continent in 1289 (Prestwich, Edward I, pp.339-42). The petition cannot be any later than November 1289 as the petition clearly refers to Chelesfeld still being sheriff. Chelesfeld had been sheriff since October 1286 (List of Sheriffs, p.67).
