Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/42/2063
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
David ap Lewelin (Llewelyn) of Merioneth of the commote of Talibont.
Name(s)
ap Lewelin (Llewelyn), David
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Ap Lewelin requests that he can have the bailiwick of a rhingildry as he used to have it before others, paying at the Exchequer as much as any other. He had held the bailiwick from the king's father for 28 years for his good service but had been ejected by Mortimer.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justice or his lieutenant to enquire of the cause that he was ejected, and if it is not sufficient then he is to be restored as he requests for the good service that he has done.
Places mentioned
Merioneth, [Wales]
Talibont (Tal-y-bont) commote, [Merioneth, Wales].
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer, Justice of Wales.
Note
The petition presents problems for dating. Rees dates the petition to 1308-20. However, the petition is answered in Anglo-Norman, and this does not become standard until after 1322. While it is not impossibly for the petition to date to before 1322 with such a response, a later date seems more reasonable.
