Reference
SC 8/42/2059
Date
[1327-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Edmund Darrel (Darell).
Name(s)
Darrel (Darell), Edmund
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
Nature of request
Darrel requests that it be ordered that he be paid of the arrears of his wages, and for the loss of two horses from the time that he was in the garrison in the town of Berwick as appears by account of the Exchequer. He asks that regard is given that he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 5 years without cause to his great damage.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer that when they have viewed what he has of the debt, if they find that the debt is due that they make payment or a suitable assignment as quickly as they are able, receiving and charging.
Note
The petition is clearly in the reign of Edward III as it refers to an order made by the king's father. However it is more difficult to be more precise. Darrel was certainly dead by 1332 as individuals were commissioned to deliver York gaol of those who had been imprisoned there for his death (CPR 1330-4, p.289). He received a general pardon in 1329 for aiding the king in the late rebellion (CPR 1327-30, p.475). It is not clear how this petition related to SC 8/42/2058.
