Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/42/2054
Date
[1322-1326]
Description
Petitioners
Alice Danvers, widow of Ralph Danvers.
Name(s)
Danvers, Alice
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Danvers requests that no letters of great men be granted to Horewode in disturbance of her right and the law, and that of grace it be granted to her a more hasty recovery out of her poverty and misfortune. Okelond and Horewode with 100 armed men came to her house of Werham, ousting her and taking her goods and chattels, by which Horewode, who was then of the Household of the king and Despenser, the son, brought letters of Despenser hindering her recovery. He has subsequently enfeoffed Berenger who is protected by the earl of Winchester.
Nature of endorsement
Let her sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Werham (Warren), Hampshire
People mentioned
Ralph Danvers, late husband of the petitioner
Richard de Okelond
William de Horewode
Hugh le Despenser, the son
Ingeham Berenger
[Hugh le Despenser], Earl of Winchester.
Note
Although one might only expect that someone would complain of the Despensers after their fall, there is no hint in this petition that they are dead, and indeed the petition suggests that they are alive as it makes mention of no further letters of great men being granted. The petition is likely to date to the period of Despenser ascendancy between 1322-6.
