SC 8/41/2046
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
John de la Dale.
Name(s)
Dale, John
Nature of request
Dale requests that he be granted the manor of Kenton in the same manner that his mother held it in allowance of the manor of Layham according to the intension of the king granted in parliament as appears by the endorsement to the bill. His mother had petitioned in the parliament following the king's coronation for the manor of Layham, but it had been granted to Edmund of Woodstock, and following his death Isabel was delayed by the minority of the heir. Having petitioned the king in parliament, he granted the manor of Kenton to her until the heir came of age. His mother has died and Kenton has been taken into the king's hand and given by bill of Chancery to his mother's executors.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.2) Because the commission made to the lady intended that the manor of Kenton was granted to her because of the action that she had for the manor of Layham, which action was delayed by actions of the king. Following Cockfield's death the action ought to descend to her heir and not to the executors. It is agreed that Kenton be taken into the king's hand and delivered to the heir. Let a commission on this be made to the heir to hold the same by the king's grace until the coming of age of the infant as his mother held it.3) Since Cockfield is dead the manor ought to be taken into the king's hand, and let the petitioner sue his action.

Layham, Suffolk
Kenton, Devon.
People mentioned
Isabel [de Cokefeld (Cockfield)], widow of Walter de Cockfield, mother of the petitioner
