Date
[c. 1337]
Description
Petitioners
John de la Dale.
Name(s)
Dale, John
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Dale requests that he be granted the manor of Kenton in the same manner that his mother held it. The manor had been granted to Isabel de Cockfield until the heir of Edmund of Woodstock came of age. Isabel had brought a writ at the common law against Despenser for the manor of Layham which he had wrongfully detained from her, and which came into the king's hand on his forfeiture. Although an inquisition taken concerning the matter showed that she had a right the manor was granted to Edmund of Woodstock, and following his death Isabel was delayed by the minority of the heir. Having petitioned the king in parliament, he granted the manor of Kenton to her until the heir came of age. Dale has petitioned to parliament to have the manor, and it has been ordered that Kenton be delivered to him, but it has not been delivered.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Layham, Suffolk
Kenton, Devon.
People mentioned
Isabel [de Cokfeld (Cockfield)], widow of Walter de Cockfield and mother of the petitioner
Hugh le Despenser, the younger
Edmund [of Woodstock], Earl of Kent
Countess of Kent
[Edmund, Earl of Kent].
Note
The petition is likely to date to c. 1337 as the fine rolls show that Isabel de Cockfield was dead by April 1337, and the manor of Kenton was granted to William de Culpho, a clerk of the king, on 13 June and 24 July 1337 (CFR 1337-47, pp.14, 20, 26). The petitioner's claims are unlikely to be much later.
