Reference
SC 8/41/2044
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de la Dale.
Name(s)
Dale, John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Dale requests a remedy as he is the heir in reversion of Matthew de Leigham, but Joan de Leigham to whom the manor of Layham descended by gift of Matthew exchanged the manor with Hugh le Despenser, the father, for the manor of Lamarsh and Wakes. However when she came to enter those manors Despenser obstructed her, and afterwards did the same when she tried to enter Layham. Following her death the Despensers held the manor between them so that no one could know which of them was tenant and have their law or right against them.
Nature of endorsement
He should show what he has of the gift in reversion.
Places mentioned
Layham, [Suffolk]
Lamarsh, [Essex]
Wakes Colne, [Essex].
People mentioned
Matthew de Leigham (Layham)
Peter [de Leigham (Layham)], son of Matthew de Leigham
Joan [de Leigham, (Layham)], sister of Matthew de Leigham
Hugh le Despenser, [Earl of Winchester], the father
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
The petition is likely to date to 1327 as this is clearly a petition made possible by the fall of the Despensers.
