SC 8/41/2028
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Walter Cros (Cross), citizen of London.
Name(s)
Cros (Cross), Walter
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Cros requests a remedy concerning the unlawful detention of his lands in Swanscombe by Cromwell. He bought the land from Maud de Swafham but was disseised by Cromwell who persuaded Joan, widow of Eustace de Swafham to accuse him of the death of her husband for which he was imprisoned for a long time. Cros was eventually delivered from prison but Cromwell had made Joan enter the land as the right heir of Reginald de Swafham, though she had no right, and Cromwell still holds the land by force, and Cros dare not sue for his right.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue in Chancery and have a writ at the common law.
Places mentioned
Londres (London)
Swanscombe, Kent.
People mentioned
Matilda [de Swafham (Swaffham)], daughter and heir of Reginald de Swafham
Reginald de Swafham (Swaffham)
John de Crombewelle (Cromwell), Keeper of the Tower of London
Joan [de Swafham (Swaffham)], widow of Eustace de Swafham
Eustace de Swafham (Swaffham).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1331 for Joan de Swaffham was pardoned for not appearing to prosecute Cros and others for her husband's death (CPR 1330-4, p.65). This may be the reason for Cros' delivery from prison, so it is likely that the petition dates to some time shortly after this.
