Reference
SC 8/41/2023A
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Crowland.
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Abbot of Crowland
Nature of request
The abbot states that neither he nor his predecessors hold anything in barony, not are amerced as barons in court until two years past when by error and misprision of clerks Bereford amerced them as barons. They have a writ of parliament that if the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are able to find that they do not hold of by barony then the forfeit and error be amended. Nothing has been done on this whereby they request remedy.1)
Nature of endorsement
He should have a writ sicut alias in Chancery, so that the king no longer hears any complaint about this.2) Coram rege et magno consilio.
Places mentioned
Crowland, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
William de Berford (Bereford), justice in the Bench.
Note
The petition must date to around c. 1322. A writ was issued to the justices of the Bench concerning the resolution of the matter complained about in the petition. This is clearly not in direct response to the petition, but marks a later stage on from it, so that the petition must date to a short while before (CCR 1318-23, pp.442-3).
