SC 8/41/2022
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
William Crabbold, Merchant of Haverfordwest; Adam Hyot, Merchant of Haverfordwest; Robert Rou, Merchant of Haverfordwest; John Parker, Merchant of Haverfordwest; William Drihull, Merchant of Haverfordwest.
Name(s)
Crabbold; Hyot; Rou; Parker; Drihull, William; Adam; Robert; John; William
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Merchant of Haverfordwest
Nature of request
They show that they have brought wine from Bordeaux many times to Haverfordwest, and on occasion the weather has forced them into the port of Fowey and other ports in Cornwall where the prince's butler and havener have taken prise of the wine and given warrant for the prise. Afterwards they came to Haverfordwest and the bailiff of the queen again took prise. They request remedy since a boat should only pay prise once in the kingdom of England.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be ordered into Chancery, and because no prise should be paid twice, the council of the queen and the prince should come before the chancellor, treasurer and other lords of the council of the king, and when they have heard their arguments, justice is to be done on the things comprised in this petition.
Places mentioned
Haverfordwest, [Pembrokeshire, Wales]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Cornwall
Fowey, Cornwall.
People mentioned
[Edward of Windsor], Prince of Wales
Isabella of France, Queen of England.
Note
The petition probably dates to c. 1327 since it is difficult to conceive otherwise when Queen Isabella could appear in the same document as the prince of Wales. Rees showed that Queen Isabella received Haverfordwest as part of her dower in 1327, and that for the price to be contemporary, the event referred to had to be in 1327 before Edward III was crowned (Petitions relating to Wales, p.56). However this seems to have been a very small window, and surely if the charging of prisage on wine had happened several times as the petition makes mention, it seems difficult to see how Isabella and the prince could have been contemporaneous for a sufficient time for this to happen.
