Description
Petitioners
Roger de Couelyngh (Cowling).
Name(s)
de Couelyngh (Cowling), Roger
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
1) Couelyngh complains of Rochester that when he was justice in Eyre in Sussex in the 16th year of the reign, Couelyngh brought a writ of trespass against the abbot of Bayham and gave it to Rochester. Rochester favoured the abbot and his writ was returned after the end of the eyre so that Couelyngh cannot have justice and is without a day to his damage. He requests a remedy.2) Couelyngh further complains of the abbot that he had made an agreement with to take the lands of several tenants, and had satisfied the tenants of the same. He entered the lands and sowed and improved them with marl. The abbot and many others came and ejected him and carried away his corn to his damage of £40. He purchased a writ in the king's court to the sheriff of Sussex to deliver his chattels, but the sheriff did not act claiming that they had been taken into another county. He petitioned the king but nothing happened so that he requests remedy.

Note
The petitions are likely to date to c. 1289. The petitions themselves refer to events in the 16th and 18th years of Edward I. In addition the petition refers to Richard de Pevensey as sheriff of Sussex, and suggesting that this was after his tenure which came to an end in November 1287 (List of Sheriffs, p.135). The guard suggests that it may date to after the return of the king in 1289, and this seems very likely for Edward I purged his administration and many petitions were received in response to this reform (Prestwich, Edward I, pp.339-42).
