Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/41/2009
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
William de Cotes, Merchant; John de Cotes, Merchant.
Name(s)
de Cotes; de Cotes, William; John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
Nature of request
The petitioners show that the customers of Hull received a certain sum as a loan to the use of the king, and they do not have letters of the coket to witness this loan as other merchants have. They request remedy that justice be done to them as it has been for other merchants of their condition.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to those who were collectors that if the petitioners loaned the sum to the king as the petition alleges, then they should make letters of the coket in due form and a sicut alias, and the process is to be continued further.
Note
The petition refers to the first year of the reign of Edward III, though the petition is certainly later. It probably dates to a similar date as a writ to the treasurer and barons concerning another debt due to the petitioners which was issued on 20 December 1330 (CCR 1330-3, p.87).
