Reference
SC 8/41/2006
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Cottele.
Name(s)
de Cottele, Nicholas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Cottele shows that he was enfeoffed of the manor of Winfrith by a grant of Newburgh and by the charter of the king because the manor is held in chief of the king. Cottele was seised for two years but now it is taken into the hand of the king because of Newburgh though he has nothing in the manor. He requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The king is to be certified of the manner and cause for the taking of the manor into his hand, and muniments viewed. Let justice be done in Chancery.
Places mentioned
Winfrith Newburgh, (Dorset).
People mentioned
Robert de Newbourgh (Newburgh).
Note
Newburgh had enfeoffed Cottele in March 1320 when a licence was issued for the same (CPR 1317-21, p.430). The petition seems to date to sometime after this, as although the licence clearly shows that Cottele was re-enfeoff Newburgh and his wife, he hadn't evidently done so when Newburgh's lands were taken into the king's hand. The lands of Newburgh in Winfrith Newburgh were in the king's hand by May 1322 when the king presented to the church there (CPR 1321-4, p.123).
