Date
[c. 1304]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret of Almaine, widow of Edmund of Almain, Earl of Cornwall.
Name(s)
Almaine, Margaret
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Margaret shows that she was assigned dower by the king of a knight's fee in the manor of Barrowby which Pesson held, and by the minority of his son and heir the keeping pertained to her. The wardship is granted to Sandale by a commission of Chancery for which the countess requests grace and remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Sandale is ordered to be before the council in the quinzene of Michaelmas to say if has or knows anything whereby the custody should not be delivered to the countess.
Places mentioned
Berweby (Barrowby), Lincolnshire
People mentioned
Edmund of Almain, late Earl of Cornwall
Stephen Pesson
John de Sandale.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1304 as an inquisition of the manor was made at that time and accompanies a writ of plenius certiorari 9 October and 29 August respectively (CIPM, vol. IV, no.208, p.131). The petition is clearly still within the reign of Edward I and therefore cannot be later than 1307, and the petitioner's husband died in September 1300. The petition dates to the period 1304-7, but as is stated above is likely to date to 1304.
