Date
[c. 1302]
Description
Petitioners
Peter Corbet; Henry de la Pomeray of Berry.
Name(s)
Corbet; Pomeray, Peter; Henry
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
1) The petitioners state that they are the next heirs of the inheritance of Vautort and petitioned at the last parliament at Lincoln stating Vautort whilst he was out of his wits granted much of his inheritance to Earl Richard, and that they were the next heirs following the death of Edmund, earl of Cornwall. They had entered the inheritance, but accepted that the king should have first seisin, and requested that this did not turn to their disinheritance, and justice be done to them. By which petition the executors of the earl were ordered to produce the charter of Earl Richard at the next parliament. The king is able to see this by inspecting the charter, and that grace and justice be done to them in accordance with the form of the charter.2) They further request will do grace according to right concerning an inquisition which has been returned into Chancery which they procured concerning lands at Harberton and Brixham in Devon.1)
Nature of endorsement
They are to show their charter and inquisition before the council and afterwards to the king.2) They are to show their charter and inquisition at the next parliament, and in the meantime it is ordered to the executors of the earl of Cornwall that they should certify the king at the same parliament concerning the estate that the same earl had in the tenements by any muniments.3) They are to be called.
Places mentioned
Berry Pomeroy, [Devon]
Nichole (Lincoln), [Lincolnshire]
Trematon, [Cornwall]
Saltash, [Cornwall]
Calstock, [Cornwall]
Harberton, Devon
Brixham, Devon.
People mentioned
Roger de Vautort
Richard [of Almaine], King of Germany and Earl of Cornwall
Edmund [of Almaine], Earl of Cornwall, son and heir of Richard of Almaine
Walter de Gloucestre (Gloucester), Escheator.
Note
The petition must date to c. 1302. The petition follows the death of Edmund, earl of Cornwall in September 1300, and then refers to the parliament at Lincoln which is presumably that held in January 1301. The petition is likely to be a subsequent parliamentary petition perhaps at the Westminster parliament in 1302.
