Description
Petitioners
Richard de Comesedieu, mariner.
Name(s)
de Comesedieu, Richard
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
mariner
Nature of request
Comesedieu shows that he has served the king and his father for many years. The king's father granted him in lieu of maintenance the office of gauger of wines in the port of the city of London until he was ousted by Mortimer. Comesedieu requests that it be ordered that he be able to have the office again according to his charter.
Nature of endorsement
Because someone else is tenant of the office for the term of his life, he should come into Chancery and show his charter, and have writs to make the office holder come, and the chancellor is to hear their arguments and take what council he thinks necessary to do justice.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
[Roger de] Mortimer.
Note
Comesdieu was appointed to the office of guager of wines in 1318 during the reign of the king's father. This, and the reference to Mortimer, must mean the petition dates to early in Edward III's reign.
