Reference
SC 8/40/1972
Date
[c. 1323]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Cwmhir.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners had of the gift and foundation of ap Madoc and other lords late of Maelienydd their lands, woods, wastes and pastures in Maelienydd with all their profits and liberties in pure and perpetual alms, and held them until disturbed by Mortimer who was lord of the land wrongly and without reason so that they cannot do or use their liberties. The land has come into the hand of the Earl of Kent by the gift of the king following Mortimer's forfeiture. They request a speedy remedy according to what they had before the coming of Mortimer; and let it be enquired by the people of the country that they had all manner of profits of woods, wastes and pastures and used all manner of liberties.1)
Nature of endorsement
They should have a writ in Chancery to the earl of Kent as to a lord of March that he should permit them to have the lands, tenements, woods and wastes according to the charter of the donors, and let there be further process.2) They should show what profits they took and what liberties they had.3) Coram domino rege.
Places mentioned
Comhire (Cwmhir), [Radnorshire, Wales]
Mellenyth (Maelienydd), [Radnorshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Cadwallan ap Madauk (Madoc)
Roger de Mortimer
Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent.
Note
The petition appears to date to c. 1323. Edmund, earl of Kent is evidently lord of Maelienydd by then, and this has to be after the fall of Mortimer (CPR 1321-4, p.275).
