Reference
SC 8/40/1967
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Walter de Cokefeld (Cockfield); Isabel de Cokefeld (Cockfield), wife of Walter de Cockfield.
Name(s)
de Cokefeld (Cockfield); de Cokefeld (Cockfield), Walter; Isabel
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Cokefelds request that since the inquisition ordered in response to their earlier petition found that Isabel's right to the manor of Leygham was sufficiently proved that the king will grant the manor to them or give it to them during the minority of the earl of Kent's heir. The inquisition found for them but the manor is in the king's hand by the minority of the earl's son and they cannot recover the same by the common law.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.2) It pleases the king that Isabel should have the manor or some other part of the inheritance of the earl's heir until he comes of full age so that she is able to have some advantage until she is able to sue her right. Let this be done according to the advice of the chancellor and treasurer.
Places mentioned
Layham, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
Benet de Cokefeud (Cockfield)
John . . .
Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent.
Note
The petition is very likely to date to 1330-1331 as it refers to the son of the earl of Kent's minority being a major obstacle to the petitioner's recovery of their manor. The earl of Kent referred to must be Edmund of Woodstock who was executed on 19 March 1330, and his son, Edmund, was restored on 7 December 1330. However, he was dead by October 1331. It seems likely that the petition can be dated to this narrow period of December 1330 - October 1331, as it seems unlikely that the petition actually referred to John, the late earl's younger son.
