Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/40/1958
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
John de Chisenhale, clerk.
Name(s)
de Chisenhale, John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Barton in Ryedale (Barton le Street), [North Riding of Yorkshire].
Nature of request
Chisenhale bought corn from the king at Barton, but soon after Michaelmas the corn and the parsonage were burnt by the Scots, so that he is unable to raise the money. He requests that the king order a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that the matter be enquired into and discharge him from the debt.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons upon the contents in the petition, and that they should inquire on this before the quindene of Easter next, if it is true or not, and when the inquisition is returned and the king certified on this, the king will do what he wishes to do, and in the meantime he should have respite of the debt.
Note
The guard notes date this to c. 1323 based on a reference to Chisenhale as parson of Barton in the close rolls (CCR 1323-7, p.164). However, although this is the only reference to him as parson there, he was active in 1321 and 22 (CCR 1318-23, p.488; CPR 1321-4, pp.89, 90). As the petition is endorsed in Latin, it is more likely to date to before 1322, so a date of c. 1322 has been selected, and it is possible that Chisenhale received Barton from the forfeited estates of Thomas of Lancaster.
