Description
Petitioners
Henry de Clif (Cliff), clerk; Adam de Brom, clerk.
Name(s)
de Clif (Cliff); de Brom, Henry; Adam
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The petitioners show that the king considering the dilapidation and destruction of the goods of the priory of Bermondsey made by the prior and convent there assigned the petitioners keepers of the priory. When they first arrived at the priory they found that there wasn't anything to sustain the prior and 18 monks, the house was in great debt, and all of the manors and houses except Bermondsey and Waddon, and their churches, which they should hold to their own use, were let at farm. The keepers have acted to reduce costs and to make arrangements for the prior and monks, but because the prior could not have his way he has accused the keepers of selling their growing corn below its value. They request that the chancellor, treasurer, Despenser and Baldock be charged to go to the priory and survey its estate, and also examine their acts . . . to sustain the monks and other ministers.
Nature of endorsement
The chancellor and treasurer should ordain upon the contents of the petition what they consider ought to be done.
Places mentioned
Bermondsey, [Surrey]
Waddon, [Surrey].
People mentioned
Prior and convent of Bermondsey.
Note
The scope for the date of this petition is apparently very limited for the petitioners were appointed keepers on 17 June 1320, and this order was superseded on 26 October 1320 so it probably dates to between these dates (CPR 1317-21, pp.457, 512).
